What started as a casual conversation while shopping for jewelry turned into a deep and meaningful podcast about life, success, and family. This happened when actress-host Pokwang visited Charo Cordial at the Maddox Jewelry showroom in Marikina City.
Having spent 22 years in the entertainment industry, Pokwang was asked by Ms. Charo about what is harder to do: making people cry or making them laugh?
"For me, comedy is harder," Pokwang shared. "Sometimes you are not in the mood, but you still have to face people with a smile. You also have to understand your audience."
The comedienne also admitted that comedy has changed significantly over the years because audiences today are much more sensitive.
"It feels like the world of comedy is shrinking," she added.
Pokwang spoke openly about her past struggles. She shared that she grew up poor. Because her family did not own a television, she and her siblings had to watch through their neighbor's window.
This experience taught her the power of prayer. Hoping to change her life, she worked abroad as an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) before entering showbiz. She admitted that she never expected to become an actress.
"Not at all! Back then, people thought actors had to be fair-skinned and beautiful. I am just really grateful that doors opened for people like us," Pokwang said with a laugh.
Ms. Charo related to Pokwang’s story, sharing that she also had to watch videos at her neighbors' houses when she was young. While Pokwang comes from a family of 12 siblings, Ms. Charo comes from a family of eight. Ms. Charo shared that one habit she cannot break is constantly checking on her parents who live in Bicol.
As they continued their conversation, Pokwang asked Ms. Charo what she is most grateful for regarding her parents.
"Now that we are older and have our own children, you realize everything. You just want to say, 'Mom, thank you. Dad, thank you,'" Ms. Charo said emotionally.
Meanwhile, Pokwang shared that she appreciated her own mother even more after giving birth to her eldest son.
Both women discovered they shared the same goal in life: to give their parents the comfortable life they used to only dream of.
As mothers, they also agreed on the importance of closely guiding children today, especially with the heavy influence of social media. Furthermore, they looked back on their childhood dream jobs, which were very different from their current successful careers as an actress and a businesswoman.
